INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) mathematics professor Dr. Sonya Armstrong will be honored by the Open World Leadership Center at a ceremony Saturday, July 28, in Bluefield, W.Va.
The Open World Leadership Center will honor local hosts in the Bluefield area including federal judges and members of the Center for International Understanding (CIU), Inc.
At the ceremony, Ambassador John O’Keefe, Counselor to Open World’s Board of Trustees, will honor judges, families, and individuals who have contributed to the experience of Open World delegates in West Virginia over the past 16 years.
The ceremony and reception will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Bluefield Inn.
Armstrong joined the faculty of WVSU in 1999 first as an assistant professor before being named an associate professor and finally professor. She served as chair of the WVSU Department of Mathematics and Computer Science from 2005-2013.
In 2016, Armstrong received the prestigious Fulbright Award and spent six months living and teaching in the Slovak Republic. More recently, during the spring 2018 semester, Armstrong spent the semester teaching in China as part of a joint degree program WVSU has with Ningbo University of Technology in Ningbo, China.
Armstrong earned her doctorate degree in mathematics education and her master’s degree in statistics both from the University of Rochester. She also holds a master’s degree in numerical science from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Bernard Baruch College.
The Open World Leadership Center supports Congressional outreach to Eurasia and other regions. It conducts exchanges that establish lasting professional relationships between rising Eurasian leaders and Americans dedicated to showcasing U.S. values and democratic institutions. Open World has introduced more than 27,000 current and future decision makers from Russia, other countries of Eurasia, Egypt, Peru and Turkey to American political and civic life, and to their American counterparts.
