INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) posted a fifth consecutive year of increased enrollment with the fall 2017 semester according to figures released today.
Speaking during his annual State of the University Address, WVSU President Anthony L. Jenkins said that total enrollment for the fall 2017 semester stood at 3,879 students, an increase of more than 10 percent over fall 2016 attendance of 3,514.
“WVSU offers a world-class faculty, an engaging learning environment, and a high-value education that transcends the teaching of just facts, figures, and theories,” said Jenkins. “I have often stated that size nor location should dictate one’s ability to compete or be successful at the highest levels. We challenge the notion that a small university in Institute cannot compete and/or outperform larger and better-funded institutions.”
Enrollment of undergraduate in-state students was up nearly 11 percent while enrollment of out-of-state students was up more than 8 percent over fall 2016 numbers.
Among West Virginia counties, the University drew the most students from Kanawha, Putnam and Boone counties. Kanawha County students saw a nearly 8 percent increase in enrollment, while Putnam County saw a more than 24 percent increase in the number of students attending.
Final enrollment figures for the fall 2017 semester will be released in October, as part of WVSU’s annual reporting to the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.
The State of the University Address is part of Homecoming activities at WVSU which continue through Saturday. For more information, and a complete schedule of Homecoming events, visit or call (304) 766-3387.
