INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Charles Marshall has been named the new head women’s basketball coach at West Virginia State University (WVSU).
“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Marshall to the State family,” said WVSU President Brian O. Hemphill. “His knowledge of, and success in, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) will prove invaluable for our program and our student-athletes.”
Marshall most recently served as the head women’s coach for the Glenville State College Pioneers, which finished the 2015-2016 season with a 17-12 record. His team finished the MEC regular season fourth after being picked to finish eighth in a pre-season poll. The Lady Pioneers led the nation in scoring (89.2), in 3-point field goals per game (average 13) totaling (377), and his team also led the nation in offensive rebounds per game (19).
During Marshall’s first season as head coach in 2013-2014, he led the Lady Pioneers to a 29-4 record and both the MEC regular season and tournament championship. In that season, the Lady Pioneers also finished the season ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region and hosted the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament.
“Coach Marshall is a proven winner and we look forward to working with him in building not only a top tier MEC women’s basketball program, but one of the best programs in NCAA Division II athletics,” said WVSU Interim Athletic Director Nate Burton.
Marshall is a native of Louisville, Ky., and has an extensive background as a basketball player and coach. He served as an assistant coach at Berea College from 2004 to 2005, and also as an assistant coach at Glenville from 2010 to 2012.
“I am excited to come to West Virginia State University and get started working to bring championships back to Institute,” said Marshall. “With the facilities we have here in the Walker Convocation Center and the support of the administration, the pieces are in place here to establish a winning tradition.”
As a player, Marshall enjoyed a successful prep career at Pleasure Ridge Park High School in Louisville, one of the top high school programs in the State of Kentucky. As a senior, he hit the game-winning shot to send his team to the state tournament.
At Berea, Marshall was a key contributor to a team that advanced to the NAIA Final Four for the only time in school history. After his senior season, he was named KIAC First Team All-Conference and NAIA Honorable Mention All-American after averaging 18.3 points per game and leading the Mountaineers to another berth in the NAIA national tournament. He was inducted into the Berea College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.
Marshall graduated from Berea College with a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology in 2004. He and his wife Sharonda have three daughters: Jordyn, Jayli and Jiya.
