INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) Extension Service will host a tree planting day on the university’s Institute campus Wednesday, October 13, from 9 a.m. to noon. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members are invited to help beautify the campus by planting trees.
“With this event, we want to bring the WVSU community together to diversify the campus canopy, replace lost trees, reduce stormwater runoff and generally add beauty to our landscape,” said Extension Agent Liz Moss, who is developing a teaching arboretum on campus. “The help of students and the community fosters a sense of ownership and pride in campus trees. We invite everyone to get involved.”
Participants will learn how to properly plant both containerized and bareroot trees and about the various ecosystem benefits trees provide.
More than 10 mature trees have been removed from campus in the past two years due to oak wilt and natural decline. Moss and participants will add back a variety of species in what will become annual plantings to regain and diversify the campus canopy.
Participants are asked to bring a pair of work gloves. Tasks include helping to dig holes, backfill soil and mulch. To learn more and sign up to volunteer, contact Moss at or (304) 661-6016.
