West Virginia State University Celebrates Successful Completion of Capital Campaign

September 17, 2026

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University (WVSU) marked the successful completion of its State of Tomorrow capital campaign today with a student-centered celebration on the campus quad.

The campaign raised more than $26.4 million, surpassing its goal of $25 million, from a total of 3,403 donors. More than $11.9 million was raised toward scholarships for students.

“Today is a milestone worth celebrating for West Virginia State University,” said WVSU President Ericke S. Cage. “The success of this campaign reflects the belief our donors have in our university and our students. Every gift helps create opportunities, expand access to education and strengthen the resources our students need to succeed. Together, we are building a stronger future for WVSU and the generations of Yellow Jackets to come.”

Of the more than 3,400 donors to the capital campaign, 1,092 were first time donors to West Virginia State.

“When we launched the State of Tomorrow Campaign in July 2023, we set out to build a stronger future for West Virginia State University and our students,” said Trey Jones, WVSU vice president for University Advancement and president of the WVSU Foundation. “This campaign has brought our community together around a shared commitment to investing in the people, programs and opportunities that make a WVSU education special. Most importantly, it will help more students access the resources they need to pursue their goals and achieve their dreams.”

Today’s celebration was held on the WVSU campus quad and featured live entertainment from Grammy-nominated rapper Petey Pablo, music by WVSU alumnus DJ ActRight, and additional performances by WVSU students and the WVSU Dance and Cheer Team. In addition to the live entertainment, students, faculty and staff enjoyed a free lunch from Fresco’s, Miss Carol’s and Sodexo, along with Kona Ice.

While the celebration marked an important milestone in the successful completion of the State of Tomorrow capital campaign, the work of building a strong future for WVSU continues, Jones said.

“The continued generosity of our alumni, friends and partners will be critical to sustaining this momentum, expanding scholarship opportunities and investing in the programs and resources that help our students thrive. At West Virginia State, we are committed to building a culture of philanthropy that strengthens our university for generations to come,” Jones said.
