INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University (WVSU) plans to hold face-to-face classes for the fall 2020 semester utilizing a modified academic calendar that was announced today.
The fall semester will begin on Monday, Aug. 10, and will conclude on Friday, Nov. 20, prior to the University’s Thanksgiving Break.
Finals will take place the week of Nov. 16-20, and fall commencement is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21.
“We have made these adjustments to our fall academic calendar based on the best information we have available at this time as it relates to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” said WVSU Interim President R. Charles Byers. “The University’s Leadership Team has discussed at great length the possibilities for reopening, and we believe this approach allows for the best and safest outcomes for our students, faculty and staff.”
The changes in the academic calendar will allow for the fall semester to conclude prior to the University’s Thanksgiving break when students travel home. Following fall commencement, students would then not return to campus until the start of the spring semester, scheduled for Jan. 19, 2021.
A campus wide committee consisting of a broad cross section of staff and faculty from all areas of the University has been meeting and developing recommendations for a safe return to campus, and additional safety precautions that will be in place for the fall semester will be announced later this month.
In addition, a schedule for staff and faculty to return to campus will be released at a later date. Campus offices have been operated remotely since March.
“We will continue to closely monitor the latest public health and safety guidelines and other developments and if we need to make additional changes, we will,” Byers added. “As always the safety and well-being of every member of the West Virginia State Family is our main concern.”
