INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) has announced a major planned gift commitment from Robert Swartz, a 1986 graduate and lifelong supporter of his alma mater.
Originally from West Virginia and now residing in Ashland City, Tennessee, Swartz has maintained a strong connection to WVSU through years of consistent giving, with much of his support directed to the WVSU Fund and the Student Emergency Fund. The Student Emergency Fund provides immediate financial assistance to students facing unexpected hardships — helping them cover essential needs such as housing, food, transportation, and other critical expenses that might otherwise interrupt their education.
His newly announced planned gift, designated for the University’s greatest needs, will be realized after his lifetime and will provide enduring resources to advance the University’s mission for generations to come. Swartz’s commitment reflects his confidence in WVSU’s leadership to steward the funds responsibly in ways that best serve the interests of its students, faculty, staff and the broader community.
“This gift is my way of honoring the role WVSU played in my life,” Swartz said. “The education, experiences and relationships I found here shaped my future, and I trust the University to use these resources wisely, meeting needs as they arise and creating opportunities that will strengthen the institution and those it serves.”
University leaders say Swartz’s generosity exemplifies the enduring bond between WVSU and its alumni.
“Robert’s commitment is a powerful reminder of how deeply our graduates care about this institution and its future,” said Trey Jones, Vice President of University Advancement and President of the WVSU Foundation. “By designating his gift to our greatest needs, he has entrusted us with the flexibility to respond to challenges, seize new opportunities, and invest in initiatives that will have the most meaningful and lasting impact on our students and campus community.”
Swartz’s planned gift will serve as a cornerstone of support for WVSU, reinforcing the University’s dedication to providing accessible, high-quality education while strengthening the student experience both inside and outside the classroom.
