West Virginia State University Alumna Dr. Ann Brothers Smith, ’64, Invests $100,000 in State of Tomorrow Capital Campaign

October 7, 2025

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University (WVSU) today announced a $100,000 investment in its State of Tomorrow Capital Campaign from distinguished alumna and longtime university leader, Dr. Ann Brothers Smith, class of 1964.

Smith’s gift underscores her unwavering commitment to her alma mater, a relationship that spans more than 47 years of continuous support. Her generosity will provide vital funding for student scholarships and key campus enhancements, including the university’s new track and field complex.

“West Virginia State University shaped the foundation of my professional and personal journey,” Smith said. “As a proud alumna and a long-time member of the Board of Governors, I believe in the future of WVSU and the critical role it plays in preparing students for success. My hope is that this gift inspires others to invest in the State of Tomorrow and ensure that our students have every opportunity to thrive.”

WVSU President Ericke S. Cage praised the significance of the gift.

“Dr. Smith is a shining example of the impact WVSU graduates can make on the world,” Cage said. “Her leadership, vision, and generosity have inspired countless students and alumni. This investment in our State of Tomorrow Campaign strengthens our ability to provide transformative opportunities for students today and well into the future.”

Smith, a retired Detroit-area public school administrator, served for decades in the Detroit Public School System as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and later as Associate Superintendent for School Leadership until her retirement in 2007. She previously served on the WVSU Board of Governors, including roles as Chair, Vice Chair, and Chair of multiple committees. She is also President Emeritus of the WVSU National Alumni Association and a member of the WVSU Foundation Board of Directors.

Her contributions to WVSU have been recognized with numerous honors, including being named the University’s Alumna of the Year in 2010. A conference room on campus bears her name in recognition of her enduring service and philanthropy. In May 2024, she received an honorary doctorate of humane letters degree from the university.

“We are deeply grateful to Ann Brothers Smith for this generous contribution, which will expand opportunities for our students and strengthen the university’s ability to serve our community,” said Trey Jones, Vice President of University Advancement and President of the WVSU Foundation. “This gift reflects a shared belief in the power of education to transform lives, and is a powerful reminder of how deeply our graduates care about this institution and its future.”

Launched during WVSU’s 2025 Homecoming, the State of Tomorrow Capital Campaign seeks to raise $25 million to elevate student experiences, strengthen academic programs, expand campus resources, and sustain WVSU’s legacy as a vital partner in West Virginia’s growth.
