INSTITUTE, W.Va. — The West Virginia State University College of Professional Studies will host its fall convocation “Career Success Strategies” on Nov. 12 in the Wilson University Union from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The objective of the convocation is to prepare students for a life after college by providing career advice and job search preparation skills. At the event, students will have the opportunity to choose from one of three concurrent sessions.
The first concurrent session, “Getting LinkedIn to Social Media: Job Search Strategies and Social Media,” will be held in room 135 of the Wilson University Union. Stacy Herrick, Communications Specialist at WVSU, will discuss how to apply social media to build a network and to find a job. Topics will also include developing a personal brand, managing an online reputation and building a professional network. Dr. Steve Richards, a professor in the Health and Human Performance Department, will give the introduction.
The second concurrent session, “It’s Interview Time: Navigating the Speed Bumps” will be held in room 136. This session will put students through a simulated job interview where they will receive immediate feedback about what went well as well as areas in need of improvement. This session will be introduced by the Health and Human Performance Department Chair, Dr. Aaron Settle. Local business and education leaders participating are: Sheila Reynolds, Instructor/Trainer, Region 2 Workforce Investment Board; Leighann J. Davidson, Research Specialist, Division of Justice and Community Services; Chris Reese, Sr. Human Resource Manager, DIRECTV; and Lt. Col. Derrick Spears, Military Science Chair.
The third concurrent session, “Pathways Ahead: Considering Graduate School,” will take place in room 134. This session will feature a panel discussion on choosing a school, areas of study, graduate career options, financing education and the application process. Panelists will include: Dr. Walter Stroupe, Criminal Justice Department Chair; Dr. Michael Kane, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice; and Dr. Brenda Wamsley, Social Work Department Chair. The session will be introduced by Patricia Wilson, Education Department Chair.
The deadline to register to attend the College of Professional Studies convocation is Nov. 7. Registration forms are available from all department chairs.
