West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission Approves
New Five-Year Contract for WVSU President Ericke S. Cage

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission earlier today approved a new five-year contract for West Virginia State University (WVSU) President Ericke S. Cage.

The new long-term agreement was approved by the WVSU Board of Governors in June.

“I am humbled to receive this vote of confidence from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the West Virginia State University Board of Governors, and the West Virginia State University community,” Cage said. “We have made great strides as an institution during my time in office and I am looking forward to continuing to build on that momentum over the next five years.”

Under President Cage’s leadership, West Virginia State University has achieved several significant milestones, including the launch of a new doctoral degree program in educational leadership; creation of a Cybersecurity Innovation Center; development of a five-year university strategic plan known as Future State; and a return to downtown Charleston with the WVSU Center.

Cage has served as the 13th president of WVSU since March 31, 2022, having previously served as interim president since September 2021.

A native of Halifax County, Virginia, Cage came to WVSU from Norfolk State University where he served as executive advisor to the president and Board of Visitors.

In addition to serving as president of WVSU, Cage serves on a variety of national, state and local boards. He is Chair-Elect of the APLU 1890 Council of Presidents, Vice Chair of the 1890 Foundation, a Board Member of the Charleston Area Alliance, a Board Member of the Mountain East Conference and a Board Member of Advantage Valley, to name a few.

Cage is a graduate of Virginia Tech and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. He holds a juris doctorate from the Rutgers University Law School and a masters of law degree in litigation and dispute resolution from the George Washington University Law School.
