Contact: Jack Bailey (304) 766-4109 jbaile19@wvstateu.edu INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) is hosting leaders from throughout the 1890 Cooperative Extension System at the Association of Extension Administrators (AEA) summer meeting, June 19-22 in Charleston. The meeting marks the first time WVSU has hosted the annual system-wide gathering, which brings together leaders from the nation’s 1890 land-grant universities.
“West Virginia State University is honored to be the host of the AEA summer meeting,” said Dr. Orlando F. McMeans, WVSU’s vice president for research and public service. “This is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our great extension, research and educational facilities and programs.”
During the meeting, AEA leadership will have the opportunity to network, discuss system-wide programmatic initiatives and policies, and receive updates from the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, which provides leadership and funding for the land-grant university system to advance agriculture-related sciences.
AEA is made up of representatives from the nation’s 19 historically black land-grant universities, established through the Second Morrill Act of 1890. Such designation allows for federally allocated dollars to fund extension programs and agricultural research projects.
The universities in the 1890 land-grant system include Alabama A&M University, Alcorn State University, Central State University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M University, Fort Valley State University, Kentucky State University, Langston University, Lincoln University, North Carolina A&T State University, Prairie View A&M University, South Carolina State University, Southern University, Tennessee State University, Tuskegee University, University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Virginia State University and WVSU.
