Softball Team Wins Mountain East Conference Tournament

Junior Brittany Allison singled to left to drive in senior Micca Mirrabella with the championship winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to earn WVSU a 1-0 win over Wheeling Jesuit in the Mountain East Conference title game Sunday in Salem, Virginia.
It was the second day in a row the Jackets had defeated the Cardinals by a 1-0 score with Allison driving in the game winner Saturday also, but in the first inning.
Senior Calli Norton and Junior Emily Thompson combined to throw the extra inning shutout. It was the third time in four tournament games that Yellow Jacket pitchers held their opponents scoreless. The staff allowed just three unearned runs over the weekend.
WVSU was dramatically out hit in both games against Wheeling Jesuit, 19-7. The Cardinals stranded 19 runners in the two games compared to the Yellow Jackets four.
But the right pitches at the right times, big plays in the field when they were needed most, and clutch hitting delivered a title.
The Yellow Jackets now advance to the NCAA tournament starting Friday. They will find out where they will be sent for regional play and who they will face Monday morning at 10 a.m. when the tournament selections are streamed live at NCAA.com.
