INSTITUTE, W.Va.West Virginia State University (WVSU) will host its annual Black History Month Convocation Tuesday, Feb.26, at 12:30 p.m. in the Ferrell Hall Auditorium featuring political analyst and former South Carolina state representative Bakari Sellers.
Admission is free and open to the public.
Sellers made history in 2006 when, at just 22 years old, he defeated a 26-year incumbent state representative to become the youngest member of the South Carolina state legislature and the youngest African-American elected official in the nation. In 2014, Sellers won the Democratic nomination for Lt. Governor and is widely considered to be a rising star within the Democratic Party. Sellers served on President Barack Obama’s South Carolina steering committee during the 2008 election.
Sellers was named to TIME Magazine’s “40 Under 40” in 2010 as well as 2014’s “The Root 100” list of the nation’s most influential African-Americans. Sellers has been a much sought after public speaker and has provided political and social commentary and analysis on many major national news outlets, including as a frequent analyst on CNN.
In addition to the convocation, a documentary about Sellers’ life, “When I Breathe, I Hope,” will be screened at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 26 in the Davis Fine Arts Building theater. A reception will be held after the screening. The convocation and documentary screening are presented by the WVSU Office of Student Life and Engagement and Cultural Affairs.
