INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Join experienced songwriter Larry Groce for a wide-ranging conversation about the magic of songs in the next Creators Program workshop, “What Songs Do,” at the West Virginia State University (WVSU) Economic Development Center (EDC) Tuesday, March 18, from 7:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Groce is one of the founders of West Virginia Public Radio’s Mountain Stage and has been host and artistic director since its beginning in 1983. The lecture is part of the program’s free Creators Talk series and will feature some of Groce’s favorite examples from Mountain Stage.
“If a picture is worth a thousand words, a song is worth a thousand pictures,” said Groce. “The right words set to the right music can express profound truth in three minutes. Sometimes the hymn can be more powerful than the sermon.”
Groce has recorded 23 albums, including the top ten hit song “Junk Food Junkie,” and many Walt Disney records for children, one of which was nominated for a Grammy Award. In all, Disney recordings have featured 36 of his songs. He has listened to thousands of songs performed by the most talented musicians in America and abroad over the past 30 years.
Launched in 2012, the Creators Program is a series of community workshops focused on essential skills and knowledge needed to create for mass media and art. WVSU partners with the Arts Council of Kanawha Valley and the West Virginia Film Office on the series. Workshops are designed for people of all skill levels, including students and others interested in expanding their creative endeavors.
