INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Charleston Chamber Orchestra at West Virginia State University (WVSU) will be performing “The Art of Russian Tango,” Wednesday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the John W. Davis Fine Arts Center on the school’s Institute campus.
Featuring vocalist Dr. Michael Riskin this will be the United States premiere of the work. Admission is free and open to the public.
“The Art of Russian Tango concert, featuring Russian-born, Israeli tenor, Dr. Michael Riskin, will be a dynamic program melding cultures and providing fascinating history through the arts of music and dance,” said Dr. Scott Woodard, WVSU associated provost and vice president for academic affairs, who will serve as conductor. “It is unlike anything the Charleston Chamber Orchestra has ever done. You don’t want to miss it.”
Riskin immigrated to Israel from Moscow in 1988. After graduating high school and Technion University, he served as an officer in the IDF Air Force. He is a graduate of the Vocal Faculty of the Jerusalem Academy of Music, and is maintaining a strenuous concert schedule within Israel and internationally advancing Yiddish and different classic authentic solo programs. Riskin guides his performances in seven languages: English, Hebrew, Russian, Italian, German, French and Yiddish.
The concert is sponsored by the Charleston Chamber Orchestra and West Virginia Humanities Council.
