Historic Year of Giving Expands Scholarship Opportunities for WVSU Students

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) concluded a historic 2026 Fiscal Year on June 30, 2026, achieving record-breaking fundraising results that translated directly into greater scholarship opportunities for students. 

In all 444 scholarship awards were received by 340 students during the 2026 fiscal year, a new record for the university.

“Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of West Virginia State alumni, donors, corporate partners, faculty, staff, and friends of the university, more students than ever before received scholarship support to help them pursue their educational goals,” said WVSU President Ericke S. Cage. “Every scholarship awarded helps remove financial barriers, allowing students to focus on their education, achieve their academic goals, and prepare for successful careers.”

In addition to the number of scholarships awarded, a total of $1,079,443 in scholarship funding was awarded, setting a new record for scholarship dollars distributed to students.

More than $5.5 million was raised in philanthropic support during the fiscal year, providing critical resources for scholarships, academic programs, and the university’s future. In total, 2,275 donors contributed during the fiscal year, the largest number of donors in West Virginia State University’s history. The donations also helped the university’s endowment grow to more than $22.2 million, also a new record high. 

“These record-breaking achievements represent more than impressive numbers, they represent lives changed,” said Trey Jones, WVSU Vice President for University Advancement and President of the WVSU Foundation. “Every gift, regardless of size, played a role in making these milestones possible. Together, the generosity of the university community is creating brighter futures for Yellow Jackets today and for generations to come.”

During fiscal year 2026, WVSU also launched the public phase of its State of Tomorrow Capital Campaign, which seeks to raise $25 million to elevate student experiences, strengthen academic programs, expand campus resources, and sustain WVSU’s legacy as a vital partner in West Virginia’s growth.
