INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Following a national search, Dr. Naveed Zaman has been named dean of the West Virginia State University (WVSU) College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics effective immediately.
Zaman had been serving as interim dean of the college since 2015.
“Dr. Zaman has done a tremendous job leading the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics on an interim basis,” said Dr. Kumara Jaysuriya, WVSU provost and vice president for academic affairs. “He has actively developed new opportunities for our students to participate in hands-on research and activities in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields while also working with faculty to ensure that they have the tools and support necessary to conduct innovative teaching and world-class research.”
Zaman has been a member of the faculty at WVSU since 2000 and, served as chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science from 2013 until 2015 when he was appointed interim dean. He has taught a variety of mathematics classes including intermediate algebra, plane trigonometry, calculus, elementary statistics and number theory.
In addition to his work in the classroom, Zaman has served as a member of WVSU’s Faculty Senate Executive Committee; WVSU’s self-study team for accreditation; WVSU’s Vision 2020 committee; and the WVSU athletics and compliance committee.
Zaman is also a member of the West Virginia NASA Space Grant Consortiums Board of Directors. Through this endeavor, he works to build research infrastructure and promote STEM education in the state. He is also a former vice president of the Dunbar Primary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and former member of the Midwest Cricket Council Board.
Prior to joining WVSU in 2000, Zaman worked as a teaching assistant and part-time instructor at the University of Kentucky.
Zaman earned a doctorate degree in mathematics from the University of Kentucky, a master’s of philosophy in mathematics and a master’s of science in pure mathematics from Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad, Pakistan, and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics from the University of the Punjab in Lahore, Pakistan.
