INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University (WVSU) and the West Virginia State University Foundation (WVSU Foundation) today received a $10,000 donation from AT&T to support the University’s Research Rookies Program.
AT&T has supported seven Research Rookies positions in the past three years, including WVSU students Kya’Achia Atkins and Tat’ana Dillard Sims for this academic year.
Designed for highly motivated students with a strong commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives, the WVSU Research Rookies Program provides freshman and sophomore students the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research, explore their intended major, develop relationships with faculty and cultivate critical thinking skills.
Ultimately, the program objective is to improve the retention of promising, high-achieving first-year students— particularly first-generation, low-income and underrepresented minority students—by providing the academic and social support necessary to facilitate a seamless transition from high school to the sophomore year of college.
