B.S. in Health Science
The Department of Health and Human Performance offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science. This program has two emphasis areas, Community Health Education and Leadership in Allied Health which prepare students for work within health education and health related fields.
The Community Health Education (non-teaching) emphasis area is a 4-year degree track designed for students who plan to work as community health specialists and educators. This emphasis area prepares individuals to take the C.H.E.S. (Certified Health Education Specialist) exam. Certified Health Education Specialists are trained to assess and recognize health disparities among populations, then plan and implement quality health programming to address the assessed needs/disparities. The field of health education offers many opportunities for graduates to work in a variety of settings including universities, corporations, local, state, and federal health departments, hospitals, volunteer agencies, and public schools.
The Leadership in Allied Health emphasis area is a 2+2 track designed for health care providers who have already obtained an Associate degree in an allied health related field. This concentration will build upon their existing professional knowledge to enhance their skills in communications, critical thinking, problem solving, research, and health theories. In addition, the concentration will equip graduates with leadership skills as they relate to the allied health disciplines. Successful completion of the concentration will increase the mobility of graduates into leadership positions in their respective professions.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HEALTH SCIENCE
- 120 hours required for graduation

- Students should consult the department chair to determine which of the courses taken for the associate degree will apply toward bachelor’s degree requirements.
Emphasis A: Community Health Education
- 67 Core Hours (including a 6 hour Internship)
- Students completing this degree track are eligible to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist Exam from the NCHEC.
- 14 Elective Hours

Emphasis B: Leadership in Allied Health
- 60 Hours from an Associate Degree
- By law there is a maximum of 72 credit hours transferrable from a 2 year institution.
- 60 Hours (GenEd + Core Courses) from WVSU
- Degree completion requirements dependent on the hours and courses transferred from the student’s Associate degree program.
- All students must meet the general education and degree requirements.
- Students can utilize their elective credits to earn the College of Professional Studies Leadership Certificate further strengthening their degree and marketability.
