Determining Federal and State Aid-Eligible Courses
Federal regulations require that student are only eligible to receive financial aid for courses which are degree-pursuant or part of their course program of study.
To be eligible for federal and state financial aid and have the courses counted towards enrollment requirements for aid eligibility the following must occur:
- The courses must be required for the student’s degree completion. Courses for elective minors and concentrations may not be included.
- Courses must meet repeat coursework standards. Courses which have been passed previously may once be repeated one time and considered an aid eligible course.
These requirements apply to the following federal and state aid programs:
• Federal pell grant
• Federal direct student loans (subsidized, unsubsidized, parent plus, and graduate plus)
• Federal college work-study
• Supplemental educational opportunity grant (seog)
• West Virginia Promise Scholarship
• West Virginia Higher Education Grant
• Higher Education Adult Part-Time Grant (HEAPS)
• Underwood Smith Teacher Scholars Program
• West Virginia Engineering, Science and Technology Scholarship
*Courses not required for degree completion or courses which have been previously passed and are being repeated for a second time cannot be paid for utilizing federal or state financial aid. Federal and state financial aid previously awarded may be reduced based upon the number of course hours enrolled which are degree-pursuant.
