The West Virginia State University Internal Review Board (IRB) ensures the safety of human subjects participants in research conducted by university faculty, staff, and students. The board consists of faculty members from each of the four colleges, in addition to at least one member of the community who offers additional expertise. The IRB reviews research proposals] in order to determine their compliance with regulations set by the Department of Health and Human Services, and with any other applicable government and university policies. The IRB may require additional reporting by investigators after the onset of research and has the authority to suspend research projects that do not fully comply with standards protecting human and animal participants.
All research conducted by WVSU faculty, staff, and students must go through the IRB.
The IRB will determine such exemptions and will respond to all research projects within two weeks of the proposal.
West Virginia State University IRB does not use paper forms. The Board requires that all submissions go through the online platform Cayuse (https://wvstateu.cayuse424.com/). All first time users must get a username and password to access the system from the Chair of IRB, the administrator overseeing the board, or from OSP. All the contact information can be found in the team information below. Once the usernames are created it takes 24 hours for the account to update and information to become active. Everyone named on an IRB protocol must complete the University’s Responsible Conduct in Research training (Directions in the attachment below). Protocols will not be evaluated until complete. Once the submissions are complete they will automatically be directed for administrative approval before coming to IRB for review. Please allow for two weeks for review. Retroactive approvals will not be granted so pick a start date that is consistent with that time delay.
