INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University (WVSU) will host its first hackathon, the MS-CC Environmental Sciences Hackathon, Friday, April 3, and Saturday, April 4.
Across the two day event students will tackle real-world environmental and cybersecurity challenges using data science, AI, and open-source tools.
Hosted in partnership with ESIIL (Environmental Data Science Innovation and Impact Lab), this hackathon invites students to think like cybersecurity and data professionals responsible for protecting environmental data systems used by communities.
Participants will work with real air quality data from distributed sensor networks and explore how faulty data, system misuse, or cyber threats can impact the decisions people rely on every day.
Across two days, students will:
• Collaborate in teams with mentor support
• Work with real-world data and APIs
• Investigate cyber and data integrity threats in sensor networks
• Design and test solutions to strengthen environmental monitoring systems
• Present their ideas and compete for recognition and awards
