WVSU Center to Host Presentation on Charleston’s Triangle District on Feb. 26

February 20, 2025

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University (WVSU) Center in downtown Charleston will host a Black History Month Speakers Event on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at noon featuring community activist Carolyn Tillman who will be presenting on the history of Charleston’s Triangle District.

The event is free and open to the public. A light lunch will be served.

For most of the 20th century, Charleston’s Triangle District was home to much of the city’s Black community, immigrants from the Middle East, and Jews who had recently emigrated from Eastern Europe. The Triangle District’s name was derived from its three primary borders: Elk River to the northwest, Slack Street to the north, and Washington Street to the south.

Tillman is a WVSU alumna and Charleston native who formerly worked in the Triangle District as a community organizer before a 35-year career with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The WVSU Center is located at 107 Capitol St. in downtown Charleston.
