Degree Pursuant Courses

Determining Federal and State Aid-Eligible Courses:

Federal regulations require that students are only eligible to receive financial aid for courses which are degree-pursuant or part of their course program of study.

To be eligible for federal and state financial aid, and have each enrolled course included towards enrollment for aid eligibility, the following must occur:

  • The courses must be required for the student’s degree completion. Courses for elective minors and concentrations may not be included.
  • Any repeated course must meet academic coursework standards. Courses which have been passed previously, may be repeated one time and still be considered an aid eligible course.

*Courses not required for degree completion or courses which have been previously passed and are being repeated for a second time cannot be paid for utilizing federal or state financial aid. Federal and state financial aid previously awarded may be reduced based upon the number of course hours enrolled which are degree-pursuant.

These requirements apply to the following federal and state aid programs:

  • Federal College Work-Study
  • Federal Direct Student Loans (subsidized, unsubsidized, parent plus, graduate plus)
  • Federal Pell Grant
  • Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
  • Higher Education Adult Part-Time Grant (HEAPS)
  • Underwood Smith Teaching Scholars Program
  • West Virginia STEM Scholarship
  • West Virginia Higher Education Grant
  • West Virginia Nursing Program
