Math and English Placement Exams

Students with more than five years between finishing high school and enrolling in college, and who do not have ACT/SAT scores, can take the ACCUPLACER exams to determine course placement. Additionally, students who feel that their ACT/SAT scores do not reflect their ability in math or English can also take the ACCUPLACER exams to improve their placement in these areas. The ACCUPLACER exams are online and self-paced, and we recommend you allocate at least an hour to take each exam. You get your score at the conclusion of the exam so that you can make the appropriate changes to your schedule if necessary.

The fee for testing is $28.00. You must pay this fee at the Cashier’s Office, located at 117 Ferrell Hall. Please bring your receipt to 108 Wallace Hall, at the time of your appointment. You can schedule your ACCUPLACER exam(s) by contacting Mr. Josh Means at jmeans8@wvstateu.edu or 304-766-3278 or Ms. Carla Brooks at cbrooks10@wvstateu.edu or 304-766-3159. Please also contact Mr. Means or Ms. Brooks if you require test accommodations due to a documented disability.

Academic Advising

All students (i.e., new, continuing, readmitted, or transfer) must see an academic advisor to register for classes.  Prior to seeing an academic advisor, we encourage all students to review MyDegree@State – our degree audit system that helps you monitor your progress toward a degree. The academic advisor will provide each student with a PIN to enroll in courses.   Each college will advise students based on their major, but students without a declared major should receive advising from the academic college that has the major closest to what the student would like to pursue. For assistance locating your advisor, students with a declared major should contact the departmental office of their major or college dean.  Students without a declared major should contact Dr. Thomas Guetzloff in the First Year Academic Advising Center at 114 Wallace Hall or call (304) 720-3888. Students should plan schedules carefully in order to avoid having to make changes after registering. Students may make schedule adjustments using MyState, but you cannot make changes after the second day of the second week of the semester. Any changes made after this time requires special permission from the dean of the college offering the class. Students will receive a grade of W if they drop a course after the second day. A student will receive a grade of F if they stop attending the class, but fail to withdraw from the course. Students should check with Financial Aid located at 125 Ferrell Hall prior to dropping the course to see what effect it will have on their financial aid eligibility. Students that require permission to enroll in a closed class or one that requires special permissions must see the dean of the college that offers the class to register. For assistance adding or dropping a class, please contact the college using the following numbers:

Please visit Registration and Records located at 127 Ferrell Hall to obtain a withdrawal form. All withdrawals must occur prior to the ninth week of the semester.
