INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University (WVSU) Extension Services’ Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) team will be hosting a Winter Tree Identification Workshop from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022.
This workshop will be held at the Dr. Hazo W. Carter, Jr. Integrated Research and Extension Building (Dr. Hazo W. Carter Jr. IREB), multipurpose room 109.
During this free workshop, participants will be using hand lenses to practice identifying live specimens while WVU Forestry Extension Specialist Dave McGill will teach the basics of tree twig and bud identification.
McGill began his path in forestry in San Luis Obispo, California, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources Management at California Polytechnic State University. He then traveled to Madison, Wisconsin, where he received his master’ in Forestry at the University of Wisconsin, then on to Penn State where he received his doctorate degree in Forest Resources. Upon making his way to West Virginia, he began his research at Westvaco Corporation in Greenbrier County before beginning his path at WVU in 2001.
McGill has also co-authored a number of publications including titles Germination, Survival, and Early Growth of Three Invasive Plants in Response to Five Forest Management Regimes Common to US Northeastern Deciduous Forests (2018) and Stakeholders’ Perceptions of Tourism Development In Appalachian Forest Heritage Area (2016).
