INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University (WVSU) is marking the 130 anniversary of its founding by undertaking the single largest one day fundraiser in the school’s history.
On March 17, 2021, the university and the WVSU Foundation are hosting the Founders Day and Day of Giving Challenge with the goal of raising $300,000 in donations for the day.
“Beginning March 17 and continuing throughout the coming year we will celebrate West Virginia State University’s proud history as an institution dedicated to service, access and opportunity that has transformed the lives of generations,” said Patricia Schumann, vice president for university advancement and president of the WVSU Foundation. “We are asking all alumni, local businesses and friends of the university to join together on this day in support of our students and programs.”
“Day of Giving is a wonderful opportunity for the State family to come together to support the university’s immediate needs, including scholarships, academic programs, athletics and unrestricted gifts. The support of our alumni, friends and community partners makes it possible for WVSU to provide students with access to a quality education that will prepare them for professional and personal success,” Schumann said.
The WVSU Foundation and university will use traditional mail, email and social media to spread the word to alumni and supporters about the special day of giving. An online donation page has been set up at for people to make a gift online.
Authorized by the U.S. Congress as a land-grant institution under the Second Morrill Act of 1890, the West Virginia Legislature established WVSU, on March 17, 1891, to provide education to African American citizens.
