INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University (WVSU) student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has received the Outstanding Chapter and Green Chemistry Student Chapter Awards for its 2019-2020 activities from the national ACS organization.
“These national awards are fitting recognition of our ACS students’ commitment to bringing science education to young people throughout the state of West Virginia,” said Dr. Micheal Fultz, a WVSU chemistry professor and faculty advisor to the ACS student chapter. “Their dedication to teaching the next generation to explore and embrace education in the sciences is inspiring.”
The WVSU ACS student chapter, comprised of more than 20 students, is one of the most active student organizations on campus and has been praised for its outreach and educational efforts promoting chemistry to area youths.
WVSU students regularly visit schools in the Kanawha Valley to teach science to students in elementary and middle schools. They also work to help host numerous STEM-related activities on the WVSU campus.
The WVSU student chapter was one of only 72 student chapters from across the country to receive the outstanding chapter designation and the only student chapter in West Virginia.
In addition, for the 11 consecutive year, the WVSU student chapter earned ACS’s Green Chemistry Student Chapter Award. Only 22 student chapters from across the country received the Green Chemistry Award, which recognizes the successful completion of green chemistry activities throughout the 2019-2020 year.
Founded in 1876 and chartered by the U.S. Congress, the American Chemical Society is one of the world’s largest scientific organizations with more than 152,000 members in more than 130 countries. The organization’s vision is to improve people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry. For more information, visit .
