Contact: Jack Bailey (304) 766-4109 jbaile19@wvstateu.edu INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) Extension Service will host its annual West Virginia Urban Agriculture Conference digitally beginning Friday, May 1, at 8 a.m. Content will be available as free video presentations and downloadable handouts on such topics as tree pruning, cold storage, hydroponics, growing strawberries, maple syrup production, farm insurance options and more.
Originally scheduled to be held on the WVSU campus, the move to a digital format became necessary in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We had planned a robust roster of presentations and activities for our 2020 event and didn’t want to miss the opportunity to share this information with our attendees,” said conference chairperson Dr. Annette Ericksen, assistant program director for agriculture and natural resources with WVSU Extension Service. “Moving to a digital platform proved the best approach and will allow us to share sessions throughout the year. We thank our partners for stepping up to the challenge and conducting their presentations in a video format.”
The video series will launch beginning at 8 a.m. Friday, May 1, with additional presentations added in the following days. WVSU is also proclaiming May 1 as Arbor Day on campus, with a video message from WVSU President Dr. Anthony L. Jenkins to kick off the virtual conference.
WVSU Extension Service partners with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service on the annual event, which traditionally brings urban farmers and gardeners, from novice hobbyists to professional farm enterprises, to the WVSU campus for two days of interactive sessions.
