INSTITUTE, W.Va.An a cappella singing group from Africa will be performing a concert of the traditional songs of Zimbabwe infused with shades of gospel and Afro-Jazz on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. on the campus of West Virginia State University (WVSU).
Nobuntu, a five-part, all female ensemble, will be appearing in the P. Ahmed Williams Auditorium of Ferrell Hall as part of a series of shows the group is performing throughout the United States.
The group’s name, Nobuntu, is an African concept that values humbleness, love, purpose, unity and family from a woman’s perspective. The group’s music is described as a fusion of traditional Zimbabwean rooted music, Afro Jazz, Gospel and Crossover in pure voices with minimalistic percussion, traditional instruments and some dance movements.
During Nobuntu’s performance the group will be joined for one song by local students from the choirs of Stonewall Jackson Middle School and Capital High School. The song, “Shosholoza,” is a traditional Zimbabwean song about mountains, trains and miners.
Also, the night of the performance, a limited edition, hand-made Yellow Jacket will be offered for sale in cooperation with Love Zimbabwe, an independent charity, working directly with people in Chinamhora Community. The Yellow Jackets are wire, bead sculptures specially designed to help raise funds for construction of a library for the community.
General admission tickets are on sale now and are $15 if purchased by Nov. 7, or $20 at the door the night of the show. WVSU students are admitted free, while WVSU employee tickets are $5. Students from other institutions, and senior citizen tickets are $12.
