INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) is hosting two series of free science-themed summer day camps throughout June and July. The “Materials in a Green, Clean World” camp targets youths in grades K-2, while “Adventures in Chemistry” targets grades 3-8. Sessions will take place in Hamblin Hall on the University’s Institute campus beginning June 7.
“Our goal is to strengthen children’s understanding of core science principles through inquiry-based lessons and hands-on activities,” said Program Specialist Hannah Payne, camp coordinator. “Participants will be able to see themselves as scientists and engineers and better understand the roles these individuals play in society.”
This level of engagement, Payne said, could encourage students to pursue higher levels of science courses throughout their academic careers.
Sessions for “Materials in a Green, Clean World” for K-2 students will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. as follows. Sessions for “Adventures in Chemistry” for students in grades 3-8 will take place from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. as follows. Parents can choose to drop off participants or stay and attend the sessions. Registration for “Materials in a Green, Clean World” is required by June 5 and for “Adventures in Chemistry” by June 8. To register, contact Hannah Payne at (304) 553-8218 or .
