INSTITUTE, W.Va. – More than 160 students will graduate from West Virginia State University (WVSU) on Saturday, Dec. 10, during a commencement ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. in the D. Stephen and Diane H. Walker Convocation Center.
U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., will serve as the commencement speaker. Manchin was sworn into the U.S. Senate on Nov. 15, 2010, to fill the seat left vacant by the late U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd.
Manchin currently serves on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.
Prior to serving in the U.S. Senate, Manchin was twice elected governor of West Virginia. During his time in the governor’s office, Manchin served in several leadership capacities on various associations, including; Chairman of the National Governors Association, Chairman of the Southern States Energy Board, President of the Council of State Governments, Chairman of the Democratic Governors Association and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Association.
Manchin also served as West Virginia Secretary of State from 2000 to 2004, and he was a state legislator from 1982 to 1996.
WVSU holds commencement ceremonies in December and May of each year.
