INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University (WVSU) student chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honors Society in Psychology, has received a Model Chapter award from the organization’s Board of Directors.
The WVSU student chapter was the only chapter in West Virginia to receive this award, and one of less than 30 worldwide out of 1,130 chapters.
“This recognition by the Board of Directors of Psi Chi is a testament to the hard work of our chapter and our students,” said Dr. Paula McCoy, associate professor of psychology and faculty advisor to the WVSU chapter. “It positions our chapter to be eligible for research money and travel money to attend Psi Chi conventions, and enhances our students’ applications when applying to graduate school.”
In granting the Model Chapter award, the WVSU Psi Chi chapter was recognized for their work both on campus and in the surrounding community.
During the 2015-2016 academic year, the WVSU Psi Chi chapter hosted a “Trunk or Treat” event for students at Weimer Elementary and Central Elementary in St. Albans, providing an evening of educational films, food and fun in the parking lot of a local church.
In addition, the WVSU Psi Chi chapter conducted two academic workshops on campus while also showing a marked increase in chapter membership.
In being named a Model Chapter, the WVSU Psi Chi chapter received $100 and a recognition certificate.
Psi Chi is an international honor society whose purpose is to encourage, stimulate and maintain excellence in scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly in psychology, and to advance the science of psychology. For more information, visit .
