INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) will conduct its fourth annual Cares Day on Saturday, April 23, when hundreds of volunteers fan out to perform service work at sites throughout Kanawha and Putnam counties.
The day-long event brings together WVSU students, faculty, staff and alumni who will perform volunteer work on a variety of projects in support of area residents. Last year, more than 500 Yellow Jackets performed volunteer work at more than 40 sites during Cares Day.
All current and former Yellow Jackets are encouraged to lend a hand, and volunteers for Cares Day are still being accepted through Tuesday, April 19. Registration is required and available online at .
“We introduced Cares Day to the Kanawha Valley as a way to say ‘thank you’ to the community for their continuous support of West Virginia State University and its students,” said WVSU President Brian O. Hemphill. “With a strong focus on teaching, research and service, Cares Day is one example of our commitment to improving the surrounding community by lending many hands to needed projects in towns and cities across the region.”
Volunteers will be working on a variety of types of projects throughout the area that could include: roadside clean-up, painting, tree trimming, digging or window washing. Other types of projects could involve working with youth, literacy education, serving meals or office work.
Cares Day will kick off at 8:30 a.m. when volunteers meet in the D. Stephen and Diane H. Walker Convocation Center beginning to join members of their respective teams and participate in a 9 a.m. kick-off ceremony before departing campus for their various work sites.
Cares Day is one of many events throughout the year celebrating the 125 anniversary of the WVSU’s founding. For a complete list, visit .
