INSTITUTE, W.Va. – As part of a statewide day of action to promote sexual assault awareness, West Virginia State University (WVSU) will host an informational table and other activities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, inside the James C. Wilson University Union.
In addition to the information table, organizers are asking participants to take a pledge to stop sexual assaults, and to take a photo and upload it to social media using the hashtags #ItsOnUs and #ItsOnUsWV.
Members of the Yellow Jacket Battalion of the Reserve Officer Training Corps will also be painting people’s nails or coloring their hair the color teal to promote awareness of sexual assault.
The event is free and open to the public.
“This day of action is an opportunity to continue raising awareness of active prevention methods each member of our campus community can take to promote a safe campus,” said Kellie Toledo, WVSU’s director of Counseling and Academic Support Services. “Through partnerships with the W.Va. Foundation for Rape Information and Services, the state’s sexual assault coalition, and REACH (Rape, Education, Advocacy, Counseling and Healing), the local rape crisis center, survivors receive additional support while our students, faculty and staff benefit through increased training to develop the skills necessary to be active in preventing sexual assault, dating violence and stalking.”
WVSU is one of 17 colleges and nine rape crisis center in West Virginia who are joining together on April 5 to promote sexual assault awareness.
The “It’s On Us” campaign is a national initiative that seeks to engage college students and members of campus communities to make a personal commitment to take a stand and be a part of the solution to campus sexual assault.
Stemming from the efforts of the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault, “It’s On Us” aims to show everyone to see it as his or her responsibility to do something, big or small, to prevent sexual violence.
