INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Members of the West Virginia State University (WVSU) Yellow Jacket Battalion of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) recently participated in a one day situational training exercise designed to improve cadets’ leadership skills.
The one day exercise, held Feb. 27 near Montgomery, was designed to give the cadets practical experience on a mock battlefield. Over the course of the day, the cadets had to attack and overcome multiple “enemy” forces using basic military maneuvers and skills they learned in ROTC.
To add to the realism of the scenarios, the Yellow Jacket Battalion used paint ball guns to replicate combat conditions. The cadets rotated through various leadership positions and were evaluated based on their abilities and military skills. ROTC uses such training events to teach cadets basic leadership skills.
Army ROTC is a college program that allows students to earn a commission as an Army officer while pursuing their bachelor’s or master’s degree.
The Yellow Jacket Battalion at West Virginia State University features students from WVSU, the University of Charleston, Glenville State College and the West Virginia University Institute of Technology.
