INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Kanawha Valley residents who are interested in learning English as a Second Language (ESL) are invited to attend one of two upcoming informational sessions at West Virginia State University (WVSU).
Sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, and Sunday, June 28, to share more information about Excellence in Culture and English Language Study (EXCELS), an intensive English program offered at WVSU. Both informational sessions are scheduled for 7 p.m. in Room 103 of the Davis Fine Arts Building on the University’s Institute campus.
“The goal of having these presentations is to offer local people the opportunity to know that WVSU has an ESL program, which can help them improve their English,” said Dr. Lan Wang, director of the ESL program at WVSU. “We hope that by taking English courses in the ESL program, they can work more effectively at their work places, or to some degree, assist those who are job hunting finding a job.”
The EXCELS program at WVSU provides the skills and training necessary to master the English language and achieve academic success, as well as preparing its students for everyday communication.
The program offers small class sizes and works to enhance language skills including reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar and vocabulary, while introducing students to American history and culture.
Students receive a certificate after successful completion of the program.
At the May 12 informational session four students who participated in the ESL program in March will receive their beginning level completion certificates.
