INSTITUTE, W.Va. – More than 205 students will graduate from West Virginia State University (WVSU) on Saturday, Dec. 13, during a commencement ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. in the D. Stephen and Diane H. Walker Convocation Center.
U.S. Senator-elect Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., will serve as the keynote speaker for the ceremony.
“This will be a special day as we recognize the newest alumni of West Virginia State University,” said WVSU President Brian O. Hemphill. “The hard work of these students, along with the commitment of our dedicated faculty to their success, has enabled the State family to recognize and honor the achievement of becoming college graduates with great enthusiasm for the bright future that lies ahead.”
Capito has served the people of West Virginia’s Second Congressional District for 14 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she has represented a diverse constituency stretching from the Ohio River Valley to the state’s Eastern Panhandle. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in November and will be sworn in as the state’s first female U.S. senator in January.
In the House of Representatives, Capito serves as a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and she is also a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, where she is the chairwoman of the Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee.
A former member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, Capito previously worked at WVSU as a career counselor from 1976-1978.
WVSU holds commencement ceremonies in December and May of each year. The December commencement ceremony also recognizes students who completed their degree qualifications during the summer.
