INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Representatives of Boone and Kanawha County Schools signed a memorandum of understanding today with West Virginia State University (WVSU) allowing high school students in those counties to get a jump start on their college education.
Through the 1 + 3 program, students can complete their first 30 hours of college credit while still in high school, and then finish their degree at WVSU over the next three years.
“At a time when the importance of a college degree has never been greater, these agreements create a real pathway of opportunity for area high school students,” said WVSU President Brian O. Hemphill. “This seamless transition from high school increases students’ chance of success in college, and ultimately to enter the work force.”
The 1 + 3 program is for students seeking bachelor’s degrees in art, biology, business administration, chemistry and elementary education. It becomes effective with the spring 2015 semester.
WVSU President Brian O. Hemphill and Provost Kumara L. Jayasuriya signed the 1 + 3 agreements today on behalf of the University with Boone County Schools Assistant Superintendent Lisa Beck and Kanawha County Schools Assistant Superintendent Mark Milam at WVSU’s Institute campus.
