INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) Extension Service is hosting the 11 annual 4-H Hip-Hop Camp July 28-30 at the Roosevelt Neighborhood Center in Charleston. The day camp is a visual arts retreat providing creative expression and business education through a Hip-Hop music theme.
“The 4-H Hip-Hop Camp provides youth with educational opportunities in creative expression with exposure to the business side of such endeavors,” said Kelli Batch, WVSU’s assistant program director for 4-H. “They’re able to learn from industry insiders what having a creative career entails.”
The goal of the 4-H Hip-Hop Camp is to provide experiences to develop a sense of independence, belonging, generosity and mastery. Participants choose a program track such as music, art, voice, photography, filmmaking, dance, recording, production and performance, learning alongside local professionals and industry experts. Educational curriculum is supplemented with recreational activities promoting physical activity and social interaction.
Launched in 2004, the camp originated at WVSU as a means of reaching an urban audience that couldn’t relate to the traditional agricultural components of 4-H programming.
“We’re in the downtown Charleston area, so it’s an innovative take on the traditional 4-H structure,” said Batch. The camp has become a popular offering for WVSU’s 4-H program, spawning a successful series of after-school and supplemental offerings throughout its history.
While this year’s camp targets existing participants attending the Roosevelt Neighborhood Center, a limited number of additional slots are available at a cost of $20.
