INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Cultivating the gardening skills of young people is the focus of West Virginia State University (WVSU) Extension Service’s Junior Master Gardener (JMG) training session Friday, Dec. 13, from 9 a.m. to noon at the WVSU Aerospace Education Laboratory (AEL) in Institute. Elementary school teachers, after-school workers, home-school parents, community volunteers, youth groups or others who work with children in grades Pre-K-5 are encouraged to attend the free train-the-trainer session.
“JMG nurtures an interest in gardening and agriculture in kids at a young age,” said Melissa Stewart, WVSU extension specialist. “It provides experience with the fundamentals of gardening and introduces science, nature and even literature using fun, educational activities.”
JMG focuses on health, nutrition, wildlife education, plant growth and development, and natural resources. Kids learn by engaging in hands-on projects and activities with an educational theme aimed toward creating life-long gardeners.
Attendees will be trained on the curriculum and receive instruction materials for implementation in the classroom or chosen venue.
Registration is required by contacting Kelli Batch, WVSU 4-H program leader, at (304) 766-4285 or . To learn more about JMG, visit .
The AEL is located at 213 Douglas Street in Institute..
