INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Hundreds of the state’s best and brightest math students will come to the campus of West Virginia State University (WVSU) for the 2013 state Math Field Day Competition on Saturday, April 27.
The 39 annual state Math Field Day will see students, their parents and chaperones from all 55 West Virginia counties come to Institute for a day-long academic competition.
Students coming to WVSU for the statewide competition have already won math field day competitions at the school, county and regional level.
“We are proud to be able to welcome the state Math Field Day competition back to West Virginia State,” said Dr. Sonya Armstrong, chair of the department of Mathematics and Computer Science at WVSU. “We hosted the event in 2009 and it was a wonderful experience for our faculty and students.”
Approximately 400 students in grades 4-12 are expected to participate in Math Field Day.
Students compete in two different categories; one for students in grades 4-9 and the second for students in grades 10-12.
During Math Field Day the students take a variety of tests designed to challenge their mathematical abilities. The tests are then graded by WVSU faculty members and awards are presented to those receiving the highest scores.
Registration for Math Field Day begins at 8:30 a.m. on the first floor of Ferrell Hall. Opening ceremonies will begin at approximately 9:10 a.m. in the Ferrell Hall Auditorium, located on the second floor.
The awards presentation and closing ceremonies will take place at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the auditorium in Wallace Hall, room 122.
