West Virginia State University to Host Katherine Johnson Day Observance Friday, Aug. 25

West Virginia State University will host a Katherine Johnson Day Observance on Friday,
Aug. 25, at 12:30 p.m. at the site of her statue on campus. The program will feature a wreath
laying at the statue and also brief remarks about Johnson’s life and legacy and impact
on not only her alma mater but the nation and world.

State Stride Set for Thursday, Aug. 17

As part of West Virginia State University (WVSU) Welcome Days activities on Thursday,
Aug. 17, beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the P. Ahmed Williams Auditorium in Ferrell Hall
WVSU President Ericke S. Cage will welcome new and transfer students to campus. Following his
brief, welcoming remarks, Cage and the university’s executive leadership team, will
lead freshmen and transfer students on a walk from Ferrell Hall to the Student Plaza outside
the
University Union, as faculty, staff and returning students wearing black and gold cheer and
provide a West Virginia State welcome to the newest Yellow Jackets.

The Clay Center to Host All-Star Jazz Tribute to WVSU Alumnus Bob Thompson

The Clay Center will host an All-Star Jazz Tribute to West Virginia State University
alumnus Bob Thompson on Saturday, Aug. 26, featuring Gerald Veasley, Alex Bugnon, Marion
Meadows, Poogie Bell, and Curtis McCain. Since 1991 Bob Thompson has been a pianist, and
regularly featured artist on West Virginia’s NPR syndicated radio show, Mountain
Stage.

WVSU Awarded Nearly $2 Million Through USDA Capacity Building Grants Program

West Virginia State University (WVSU) has been awarded nearly $2 million in grants from
the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture
(NIFA) as part ofa major investment of more than $33 million to support capacity building
efforts at the country’s 1890 Land-grant Universities.

WVSU Continues Immunization Education Work Through EXCITE Subaward

The West Virginia State University (WVSU) Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Program
has
been awarded a $50,050 Extension Collaborative on Immunization Teaching and
Engagement
(EXCITE)grant as a subaward in collaboration with West Virginia University (WVU),
which will help the Cooperative Extension System to continue its mission to increase
vaccine confidence among rural and other underserved communities.

USDA Awards $4.5 Million to Next Generation Project to Cultivate Future of Agriculture

The USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture has awarded $4.5 million
to
the West Virginia Agriculture Professionals’ Next Generation project, project which
aims to foster the next generation of diverse food and agriculture professionals. The project
will be led by Dr. John Kessell, Agricultural and Natural Resources (ANR) program leader at
WVSU.
