INSTITUTE, W.Va. — Nineteenth-century slaves seeking freedom along the Underground
Railroad did not have the aid of text messaging, e-mail or even letters for communication.
Instead, theories suggest that other, unconventional methods were used to guide them to
freedom.
One such method – coded messages sewn into quilts – is on display at West
Virginia State University through Oct. 6.

Sept. 8 for a special presentation to Ms. Vada Smoot McGowan. McGowan will be 102
years old Nov. 4 and is believed to be WVSU’s oldest living
alumna.

– Dr. Claudia Rankins, a physicist nationally known for
her work with the structure of atomic particles, will be the featured speaker for West
Virginia State University’s College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics convocation
