About TRIO Student Support Services (SSS)
The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program that promotes student development by providing opportunities to grow personally, socially, and academically while motivating students toward successful completion of their postsecondary education. 

The goal of SSS TRIO is to increase the retention and graduations rates of its program participants while helping them prepared for graduate school or industry. TRIO SSS provides academic support, career advising, financial aid assistance and graduate school preparation. The program also offers leadership development and a supportive community focused on empowering students to succeed.
 
What TRIO SSS Provides:
Academic Guidance: Mentoring and individual assistance to help students develop goals and an academic plan

Tutoring: Academic support and coaching in English, math, business and science courses in addition to individualized assistance with writing and test taking strategies
 
Workshops: Informational sessions offered on time management, notetaking, financing your education, tax preparation, resume writing, graduate school and other life skills
 
Career Guidance: Career and educational planning, graduate school tours, career development assistance and resume building
 
Financial Coaching: Assistance in applying for financial aid (FAFSA), scholarship searches, managing credit and debt, and understanding personal finances
 
Resources: Access to computers, calculators, textbooks, reference materials, FREE Printing, study areas, and group work space
 
Scholarships and Grants: Grant Aid and scholarships are available for TRIO participants.
 
Cultural Exposure: Cultural events and trips that will broaden your horizons and enrich your life experience
 
TRIO Student Support Services is regulated by the federal government.  To be eligible, students must permanently reside in the United States and meet at least ONE of the following criteria: 

  • Be a first-generation college student (neither parent received a bachelor’s degree)
  • Have limited income, according to federal guidelines
  • Have a documented disability
  • Have an academic need

First year students are matched with an experienced TRIO-SSS Scholar (peer mentor) to provide additional support and a smooth transition to West Virginia State University and the TRIO SSS program.
Participate in TRIO SSS Student Organization:  Students within the TRIO SSS program may take on a leadership role to build a stronger TRIO-SSS community, produce long-lasting relationships and enjoy fun activities. 
Attend Student Success Workshops:  TRIO-SSS students attend workshops in career exploration and preparation as well as test-taking strategies.
