Dr. Paula McCoy

Professor

Dr. Paula K. McCoy is a clinical psychology professor in the College of Business and Social Sciences at West Virginia State University (WVSU).  Prior to joining WVSU, Dr. McCoy taught doctoral level courses in biofeedback at the University of North Texas, and undergraduate courses at Marshall University, and the University of Charleston.

Dr. McCoy is a licensed clinical psychologist and her professional experience includes employment at the Prestera Center in Huntington, WV as an adult outpatient therapist, the Mildred Bateman Hospital on the Marshall University unit conducting admissions intakes, group therapy, mortality reviews, and instructing Marshall University medical school students in interviewing techniques.  She also operated a part-time private practice in Hurricane, WV for 6 years and has served as a forensic consultant with the Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney’s office.

Dr. McCoy is faculty advisor for Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology.  Under her leadership, the WVSU chapter won a model chapter award in 2015-2016.  Other extracurricular activities include taking students to the American Psychological Association in San Francisco, CA, attendance of the premier of the NOVA program on Addiction and the Opioid Crisis, attendance of the Kanawha County Adult Drug Probation Court graduation, and co-sponsoring events for Mental Health Awareness Month with the Charleston Chapter of the American Psychiatric Association such as the viewing of “A Beautiful Mind” at the Labelle Theatre in South Charleston, WV, followed by a panel discussion of local psychiatrists and psychologists on the disorder of schizophrenia and its treatment.

Dr. McCoy has participated in the Ronald McNair Research Program and has published in “The Education and Treatment of Children” and “Behavior Analysis Digest.”
