Mid-Year Commencement is December 19

     Approximately 165 students will receive a holiday gift this year that they have earned - - a bachelor's or master's degree from West Virginia State University. WVSU will hold commencement exercises at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 19, in the Charleston Civic Center.
     Included in the graduates will be ROTC cadet Chi Quita L. Mack from Columbus, Georgia who will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
     WVSU President Hazo W. Carter, Jr. will introduce the featured speaker Mr. Eric Coleman. Mr Coleman is chairman of the WVSU Board of Governors and the New Business Development Manager with Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan.
     Mr. Coleman holds a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Kentucky, a master of science in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a master of business administration in Global Leadership and Management from Northwood University. He has been employed by Dow Chemical for the past 18 years holding various positions within the company. He was named to the WVSU Board of Governors in 2002 and has served as Chairman since 2007.    
    President Carter will bestow on Mr. Coleman, an Honorary Doctor of Laws.Honorary degrees at West Virginia State University are conferred upon distinguished alumni, or persons who have achieved prominence in education, civic, artistic, business and other professions. The Honorary Doctor of Laws is regarded as an appropriate award for distinguished service to the state, to learning, and to mankind.
     Teachers of the Year for 2010 will also be recognized. They are: Michael Carter from Riverside High School, Joseph Kincaid from Poca High School and Robert Morris from Clay County High School. The teachers are selected from schools in the Regional Educational Service Agencies (RESA) 3 which serves Boone, Clay, Kanawha, and Putnam counties.
     Graduating senior, Tiffany Finkton will give the student response.  Ms. Finkton is a communications major and was recruited to WVSU to play on the Lady Jackets basketball team
    Dr. R. Charles Byers, Vice President for Academic Affairs, will serve as grand marshal. He will be assisted by faculty marshals, all of whom are graduates of WVSU.
     Musical selections will be provided by the West Virginia State University Concert Band under the leadership of Scott Woodard.
     WVSU commencement exercises are open to the public. A reception will follow.
