The Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) Program at West Virginia State University is an academic school year and summer residential program.  The goal of the UBMS program is to enhance the students' interest and academic ability in mathematics and science by providing opportunities to work on projects with researchers and mentors, apply physics and mathematical concepts to real-life experiences, and take related educational, recreational, college and cultural field trips.

The Upward Bound Math Science program consists of a Fall Component and a Summer Residential Academy.

In the fall component students receive year-round academic support including weekly tutoring sessions, bi-monthly Saturday instruction and assistance with preparation for standardized exams. In addition, UBMS participants have the opportunity to earn a quarterly stipend of $120.

Summer Academy
UBMS participants are required to attend the six-week residential academy on the campus of West Virginia State University.  During the summer academy UB Math Science students take classes in the areas of Math, Science, Computer Technology, English and conduct individual research projects in addition to enjoying various recreational, social, outdoor, and educational activities.

The UB Math Science Program is funded by a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education. All activities and services are provided at no cost to students.

To be selected for the Math/Science program applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled in the 9th or 10th grade in a target high school
  • Have an overall GPA of 2.5 or better
  • Demonstrate a desire to succeed in math, science, or technology area
  • Be a potential first-generation college student (neither parent has earned a bachelor's degree) or meet federal income guidelines.

Students selected for participation must be willing to work hard!
