West Virginia State University Students Take Top Honors at Coal River Film Festival

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Two West Virginia State University (WVSU) students won top honors at the first Coal River Film Festival.

J.P. Fulks, a Regents Bachelor of Arts student majoring in communications, won Best Screenwriting for “The Gallows Girl” and Best Director for “The Gutter.”

Scotty White, a senior majoring in theatre, won the Best Student Film Award for “Paid in Full.”

Dr. Ali Ziyati, associate professor and chair of the WVSU Communications Department, said, “Our students, as always, make us proud. We plan on encouraging more students to represent WVSU in local and national festivals.”

Other WVSU students participating in the festival were: Elaine Abdalla, a communications major; Dakota Burns, visual communications major; and Stephen Hanson, a communications major.

Categories for the first year film festival included; Best Film, Best Short Film, Best Student Film, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Music and Best Production Design.

The inaugural Coal River Film Festival took place Aug. 9 at the Boone Arts and Heritage Center in Madison. The event was presented by the Madison-Danville Jaycees.
