 WVSU President Announces Retirement Plan

INSTITUTE, WV (August 22, 2011) - Dr. Hazo W. Carter, Jr., President of West Virginia State University (WVSU), announced today he has finalized plans to retire following recruitment and installation of a new leader.  Dr. Carter’s announcement continues the succession plan that he outlined to the Board of Governors in March 2011.

“It is an honor to lead this great University. I thank the students, alumni, faculty, staff, the Board of Governors and members of the community for offering me such a deeply rewarding opportunity, “ Dr. Carter said.  “Everyone in the WVSU family passionately shares a common goal - to make our institution the best that it can be, with dedication to teaching, research, and public service and providing widely respected academic programs that make students successful in their lives and careers.”

During his tenure WVSU recovered its land-grant status, became a university, maintained continuous accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission of the North

Central Association of Colleges and Schools, established master’s degree programs, and  received recognition as a research institution by the state and federal government.  Under his leadership WVSU has a presence in 30 counties and 8 other countries. The University manages a fifty-five million dollar budget and has a total financial impact on West Virginia’s economy that exceeds 254 million dollars annually.

“We all celebrate Dr. Carter’s dedication and thank him for his time with us and his historic legacy,” said Board of Governors Chairman Larry Rowe.  “The University’s stature and mission have grown under Dr. Carter’s leadership.”

According to Rowe, the Board of Governors will begin to plan the transition with a national search for a new president. The search is expected to be completed by July 1, 2012.
